Good beer writing is about much more than simple enthusiasm. That plays a part, of course, but to produce engaging and witty content that makes you want to return every time a post is added (or a column filed, a book written etc) is actually extremely difficult. There’s the simple knowledge that needs to be accrued, to be informative to the readers. But personality also makes copy far more interesting – you feel as if you are conversing with the writer, rather than simply scanning a page. In short, good beer writing is a skill – and at BrewDog, something we really enjoy reading.

But beyond that, we also love meeting the people behind the words, getting to know them and doing what all of us love doing best – making beer! Last month, we invited the beery brains behind three of our favourite beer websites up to our Ellon HQ for a brewday, and let them loose on our pilot kit. Adrian Tierney-Jones of Called to the Bar, Matt Curtis of Total Ales, and Jonny and Brad from The Craft Beer Channel appeared on our doorstep at 6:30am ready and willing to get to work on their creation!

The guys had been conversing for a while on what to brew, and it was Jonny and Matt’s love of experimenting with fruit in beers that won out in the end. They began talking about lagers, and after bouncing emails around actually ended up with an 8% abv sour tripel, infused with peach and apricot. Christened Peach Therapy, the final beer will be tart rather than full-on sour – which should work really well with the fruit infusions and the European hopload of citrusy Mandarina Bavaria from Germany and the aromatic French hop Strisselspalt.

After the grain had been carried from the mill, it was time to mash in under supervision of the capable hands of Nick ‘I tend to go full geek at everything’ Zeigler. First though, a run-down of the day ahead, and a chance to taste some of the pilot kit creations conditioning away quietly in tank. Sampling beers at 7:40am always concentrates the brainwaves, and as a result our invited writers soon got down to business, brewing, chatting and taking notes – or in the case of the Craft Beer Channel guys, strapping on the wearable tech and hitting record.

Such was the enthusiasm and boundary-pushing, the mash got a trifle sticky (it was more a case of our cooks being too imaginative than too many). Adrian, Matt, Jonny and Brad then had a tour of our Ellon facility, including the witnessing of the debut full-scale run of Punk 500’s from our brand-new canning line. Following that, we sampled a few special beers with them in our tasting suite before Captain James arrived to fill the guys in on some of our plans for the year ahead, and they had a chance to throw whatever questions they wanted his way.

As a result, some fantastic content has been put together – you can check out Adrian’s near-poetic thoughts on the day, whilst Matt's interview with James makes for a typically insightful post, with more to follow. All four are working towards some extra-special artwork to adorn the final bottles, when Peach Therapy is ready to be released. Look out in the near future for an announcement about exactly how that launch will go down – but it is likely to involve a rather large party with curated beers and all in attendance! Thanks to the guys for agreeing to take part, we all had a great – and educational – day!

Oh, and for the final word on the day…Heeeere’s Jonny! (and Brad).
