Day 1 of democratic beer-making is done. Four styles have battled it out to be crowned the #MashTag 2019 winner, but sadly there can only be one. With hundreds of votes cast and counted on our social channels, day one of #MashTag 2019 looks like this:-

#MashTag 2019 Beer Style:

Pale Ale/Bitter - 15%

IPA – 38%

Stout – 24%

Barley Wine – 23%

So the #MashTag beer you’ll be enjoying later in the year will be an IPA!

Thanks to everyone who voted for the #MashTag beer style for 2019. Although it looked like barley wine could take the lead at the start, the hopped-up charm of an IPA takes the crown for this year's brew.

Monday: Beer Style – IPA

Tuesday: Malt Bill & ABV - ?

Wednesday: Hops & IBU - ?

Thursday: Special Twist - ?

Friday: The Label - ?

But we're not done yet! #MashTag is a week long commitment, meaning you still have 4 more days to have your say on the finished beer. Next up, you get to pick the malt and ABV of our new IPA.

As a reminder, a social vote will go up on our FacebookTwitter and Instagram profiles where you can have your say on what goes into our 2019 brew.

Voting is open from 10am - 6pm each day, with the exception of Friday (when the artwork magic commences, to a longer deadline). We’ll tally up all of the votes across the different platforms each evening and every blog post will include the results from the day before. So let’s pick a malt bill!

Day Two: Malt Bill & ABV

How should #MashTag…be mashed?

4% Irish Red Ale

Malt Bill: Pale, Roasted Barley

First up, an Irish Red Ale. Pale malt, the perfect backbone to many beer styles with robust pale malt flavours like bread and dough. Roasted barley will give the beer nutty, coffee profiles and a rich tan head.

6.5% American Amber Ale

Malt Bill: Pale Malt, Crystal

Our second potential pathway for #MashTag 2019 is to pair Pale Malt with Crystal. A speciality malt used to give awesome rich caramel flavours to beer, alongside aroma and mouthfeel.

9% Red Double IPA

Malt Bill: Pale Malt, Cara, Crystal, Highly Kilned.

The strongest of the three, a Red Double IPA. Alongside the Pale and Crystal malts, the Cara adds sweetness and body to the beer. Expect caramel and toffee flavours.

The malt bill is the baseline of a beer – The body, flavour and colour of what is in your glass owes more to this first stage of the brewing process than any other. Until we hit the hops tomorrow, that is…

These are your three choices for the continuance of #MashTag 2019 – don’t forget you have until 6pm today to get those votes in. We’ll then tally everything up and take the beer in its next logical direction – hops and IBU. Be sure to vote in our Malt election!
