THE 2017 BREWDOG PROTOTYPE CHALLENGE

THE 2017 BREWDOG PROTOTYPE CHALLENGE

If you love a chance to compare and contrast different beers, then this is your week. The Prototype Challenge returns – and once again you are the ones calling the shots! If you’re unfamiliar with the contest, we release different beers at the same time and hold them up to a public vote across our social media channels to see which we brew again. Previous runnings have unearthed future stars such as Jet Black Heart, Jack Hammer, Cocoa Psycho, Vagabond Pale Ale and Hop Fiction.

So which beer will rank alongside them and win the 2017 Prototype Challenge?

TANGERINE SESSION IPA

Buy our 2017 Prototype Series online here

Malts: Pale, Cara, Crystal

Hops: Chinook, Ahtanum, Simcoe, Citra, Mosaic, Amarillo, Cascade, Nelson Sauvin

ABV: 4.5%

IBU: 40

OG: 1.045

First up we have a perfect summer cooler – an IPA that combines new world hops and the bright flavour of (you guessed it) tangerine. We have combined a fairly colossal selection of favourites from the hop store and used them in the boil, whirlpool and then the dry-hop stage to release as much of their aromatic resins as possible. The reason for this is we wanted this IPA to be as citrusy as we could get even before we added the tangerine. Also we used a touch of Cara and Crystal malt to give the body a hit of toasty caramel and add a slight sweetness to counterpoint the enormity of the citrus on the flavour. Coming in at a session-happy 4.5% ABV, this is your first contender!

BLACK RYE IPA

Buy our 2017 Prototype Series online here

Malts: Pale, Rye, Carafa, Dark Wheat

Hops: Columbus, Chinook, Centennial, Simcoe, Citra

ABV: 6.5%

IBU: 70

OG: 1.060

Next up we have a dark challenger, and it is one that has a left-right jab of two classic twists on the American IPA. Firstly we added into the malt bill enough Carafa and dark wheat to leave a beer as typifies the modern classic Black IPA style. But we also went ahead and introduced rye into the grist as well, hitting that sweet spot between Rye IPA as well. The result is a meeting of two of the titans of the maltster, all layered through with some seriously resinous and piney C-hops (with Simcoe playing the role of honorary C-hop). The result is a bitter – 70 IBU – dark brew with coffee, dark chocolate and a huge amount of sticky resin and pine flavour.

DOUBLE IPA

Buy our 2017 Prototype Series online here

Malts: Pale, Maris Otter

Hops: Columbus, Simcoe, Mosaic, Citra, Amarillo

ABV: 8.5%

IBU: 60

OG: 1.073

The final of our three challengers is a Prototype at which we threw the proverbial kitchen sink. Kettle hopped with Columbus and Simcoe, Whirlpool hopped with Mosaic, Simcoe, Citra and Amarillo and then enormous levels of dry-hop with more Citra, Mosaic and Simcoe – this is a hopheads dream. We pared back the malt bill to leave a base allowing these hops to shine and they haven’t let us down. Our American ale yeast powered this double IPA through to 8.5% ABV and leaving a bone-dry beer with flavours of mango, peach, pine, apricot and citrus. Intense and vibrant from start to finish.

In our latest Upcoming Brews post where we previewed this Prototype Series we also revealed there would be four beers this time around. Sadly the Prototype German-hopped Blonde Ale did not make it through our stringent Taste Panel so we have decided not to release it. We live or die by the quality of the beer in your glass, and if we don’t love a beer 100% then it won’t see the light of day. So we are rocking three Prototypes this time around instead!

The Prototype beers are live in our online shop now, and will launch in our UK Bars at 6pm tonight, Thursday 17th August. As with previous Prototype Challenges, it’s over to you to decide which we will brew again – taste them, make notes, compare and contrast – and then vote in the poll below this post, or by checking out the posts on our social media feeds.

So which will it be? The Prototype Challenge is on!

Black Rye IPA for me! Balanced, smooth and nice and hoppy. Double IPA also very nice, but the rye ipa more special I think.
Lee 14.09.2017 @ 6:06am
Tangerine all the way
JC 14.09.2017 @ 12:20am
Tangerine! Although love the blond aswell!
Paddy Pearce 13.09.2017 @ 9:12pm
A grand IPA , with the essence of a good a solid stout . A fantastic combination that should not be possible; a feat that can only be pulled off by Brewday.
Wartacus 08.09.2017 @ 11:46pm
Tangerine session ipa for me is the winner great aroma and great taste
Mars 07.09.2017 @ 10:48pm
Double IPA wins it for me - prefer it to Hardcore IPA
Tangerine IPA is nearly there but doesn't beat Elvis
Black Rye is good but too dark for an IPA but not quite a stout
Enjoyed the tasting though. Might have to try again!
Tom Challinor 05.09.2017 @ 4:51pm
DIPA as a replacement for Hardcore IPA
TheBBG 05.09.2017 @ 7:30am
Voted for the DIPA, as t was the best of the 3, but I'm not sure we need another DIPA, at least assuming we still have Born To Die regularly.

To be honet, although all 3 were deent, I don't feel any fill a gap in BrewDog's line up (Elivis works better as a fruit-flavoured, and Libertine was a far better Bliack IPA), and I'd rather they put something like 9 to 5 Wizard on the slate.
Angus R 03.09.2017 @ 8:57pm
The Rye best for me on strength and roundness of flavour. Tangerine very refreshing - and unusual - a good session/summer IPA. Also, enjoyed the Double and (maybe) detected a bit of tangerine in there, too.
EquityPunk106 03.09.2017 @ 6:52pm
The Tangerine was a bit of a disappointment, and frankly, a bit too similar to the grapefruit forward Elvis Juice or even previous winner, Jack Hammer.

Had to go through three bottles of each to make a decision about the other two…

The Black Rye is good, with a nice bite that's sometimes missing in this style. But the DIPA wins for me, even though it has similarities to one of my all-time favourites and current range stalwart, Hardcore.
Steve Hughes 03.09.2017 @ 12:48pm
Tangerine IPA - smelled amazing. Tasted dull
DIPA - tasted like it was very strong. Very pleasant.
Black Rye - very lively. Dark, Rye, very tasty, smooth, Coffee. AWESOME!
Graham D 31.08.2017 @ 2:22pm
Black Rye IPA for me. Double IPA was a close second.

Tasting notes (tasted from bottles):

Tangerine Session IPA – A bit lacklustre compared to Fierce’s Tangerine Tart. It’s got a great nose but doesn’t follow up on it.

Double IPA – A welcome change from all the sweet DIPAs that’re all the rage these days. Bone dry, minimal malt, ALL THE HOPS. Harks back to Hardcore IPA.

Black Rye IPA – Brewdog have always struggled to make even passable BIPAs. This, however, is a fucking good effort. Black Hammer still wins.

1. Double IPA: (9/10), exquisite.
2. Black Rye IPA: (7/10), very good, a bit too roasted.
3. Tangerine IPA: (5/10), most unique, too much tangerine flavour.
Helen 30.08.2017 @ 9:18pm
1. DIPA (8/10) favourite of three, very good taste, just the right amount of bitter and citrus flavour.
2. Black rye IPA (7/10) liked it, but a little too dark for my taste.
3. Tangerine IPA (4/10) didn't like it at all. Tangerine flavour way too strong.
Jacob and Nick 27.08.2017 @ 5:50pm
Tangerine IPA was far too organge-y. Tangerine is obviously the vibe but it was far too much. Tasted like raw orange zest with no hint of hops, barley or malt. 5/10

Double IPA - Very well balanced. Good flavour, a delicious and harmless drop. 7.5/10

Black Rye IPA - Good smokey flavour. A bit too basic and stouty. 7/10
Nick 26.08.2017 @ 10:34pm
Tangerine gets my vote. Very subtle hint of citrus works really well!
Andy 26.08.2017 @ 3:40pm
Just tried the tangerine and love it a lot. I think cynically it should win because apart from being so good its also quite special compared to what else is available on the market and thats a good selling point.
Simon 26.08.2017 @ 2:55pm
Double IPA for me. Loved it.

I didn't really like the Tangerine sessions IPA, However I don't eat orange or any kind orangey citrus flavours, so was always going to be a hard one to like. I think it has been made really well and the infusion of the flavours is really good, just like Elvis Juice.

Black Rye was very nice, love the idea of it and again really well made.

Double IPA was the one for me, Punk is my favourite so a double hit of that flavour was immense. I could drink it all night!
Jones 26.08.2017 @ 1:01pm
Can we not just have all 3, such a shame that we have to choose only one of them
anonymous 26.08.2017 @ 12:59pm
Any chance we could get a 3 pack of just the Tangerine Session? Might need a few more just to confirm to myself that it's my favourite.
Dave 26.08.2017 @ 12:43pm
The Black IPA is my pick - just ahead of the Double IPA. The tangerine one isn't as good as Elvis Juice, so don't see the point of that one as much.
Joe 25.08.2017 @ 9:08pm
I liked all three. But the tangerine seemed like a novelty beer and the DIPA is a lot like some of the other beers in the range. The dark rye stands out as being full of flavour, but still nicely quaffable. Dark, yet hoppy. And it's different enough to stand out.
James D 25.08.2017 @ 3:35pm
Tangerine Session for me.

Enjoyed all three but it squeaks ahead. The Black Rye had a nice taste, not too overpowering but also not quite my bag, so misses out on my vote for that reason. The DIPA, although nice, didn't seem to set itself apart from many others I've tasted recently.

Tangerine was crisp and clean with a proper little zing to it. I'm hoping it wins out so I can look forward to having a few cold ones next summer in the sun!
Robbo 25.08.2017 @ 11:22am
DIPA has to be my favourite. I don't get the Tangerine one. It just tastes like bitter pith. No fruit flavour at all. I had to put a dash of lemon juice in it to make it remotely palatable! It would be nice to see the Black Rye IPA in the Brewdog line up. It's not my kind of thing but it complements what's already available.
Levorg Penmancho 24.08.2017 @ 6:32pm
Bought the case of 3. Tried Double IPA and Black Rye IPA in a bar (they didn't have Tangerine Session IPA because it was so popular, however I just tried it from the bottle). If you're an Elvis Juice fan, Tangerine Session IPA is like Elvis' little brother. Almost too easy to drink. Every sip led me to the next, until the bottle was empty. Vote for Tangerine, because I want more. Instant BrewDog Headliner. Now stop reading and try some.
Paul Donald 24.08.2017 @ 3:15pm
The Tangerine Session IPA is the beer of the summer, amazing flavour for a session IPA. THis is just a great beer
Middle aged woman who loves great beer 23.08.2017 @ 8:27pm
Black rye IPA gets my vote. A different style for the range. All are really good though. Exciting challenge to try. Perhaps I should try them all again to make sure ????
iBaa 22.08.2017 @ 8:07pm
Black Rye IPA gets my vote ????
Nick Goodwin 22.08.2017 @ 7:18pm
TIPA by a country mile, if you know your beer that is.
Jock sprock 21.08.2017 @ 7:22pm
Black rye for me. Tangerine was light and not to overpowering. And didn't like the aftertaste of the double IPA
anonamoose 21.08.2017 @ 6:58pm
To the people that rate the TIPA so highly:
You're wrong.
Yowzman 21.08.2017 @ 6:55pm
Tangerine Session

6/10 - Wonderful tangerine nose and makes a great first impression, but if you took the tangerine away it would be a really average beer. I feel like the entire beer is riding on its "tangerineness". It's a slacker.

Black Rye IPA

9/10 - Absolutely wonderful, literally can't fault it. I can't give it 10/10 because it doesn't have the wow factor of something like an imperial stout but its a truely great beer. Like, truely great.

Double IPA

7/10 - Really good beer, would order any day. Its a real meat and potatoes kind of beer, has everything you need. But it's not pushing the envelope.
Paul Henstock 21.08.2017 @ 6:09pm
Loving the new beers !
Gary Magee 20.08.2017 @ 11:02pm
A proper good stout nice and rich .
anonymous 20.08.2017 @ 6:23pm
Double IPA is amazing really nice flavour and strength just the right about of kick lovely
Tristan 20.08.2017 @ 6:21pm
Tangerine session IPA 4/5. Love the aroma and flavour but a little disappointed by the body/ finish of the beer but then it's a session beer!

Black Rye IPA 3/5. Nice hoppy flavour not too overpowered by the dark malts and a nice spicy finish but as someone earlier said it's not a patch on Libertine imho.

Double IPA 4/5 Great mango aroma and good hoppy flavour with a nice piney resinous finish. Kinda somewhere between BTD and Hardcore. However it just makes me hanker for BTD one of my favourite BrewDog beers!
Tom 20.08.2017 @ 2:15pm
Tried all 3 twice now and they are all good but I'm thinking the double IPA for me. If they could subtle down the tangerine flavours and add a few more hops it's woulf be that one. I'd buy all 3 again so a hard choice!!
Steven C 20.08.2017 @ 11:34am
Double IPA - does exactly what it says on the tin. Cracking IPA and reminds me of joker double so defiantly a winner. Solid hop flavour and not too overpowering for a double coming in at 8.5%. I think it will take over from hardcore IPA, this is much smoother. As double IPA's go 9/10

Tangerine Session IPA - who knew I liked tangerines so much! This fruity bad boy is belter! Great summer feel to it and easy to drink. A session so 4.5% is perfect. If you like Elvis juice I think you will like it and less alcohol if your on an all day session. Not sure yet if I could handle 8 of them as I think it would be a bit sickly but in terms of 4 beers at a BBQ this is a winner. 9/10

Black Rye IPA - wasted on me sorry. I thought it's going to be similar to Rye hammer. Although it is smooth I think I will leave it up to someone else to review as it's not really my bag and would be unfairly judged...
Kyle A 20.08.2017 @ 9:12am
Black rye IPA is delicious and gets my vote!!! :)
Derek Muir 19.08.2017 @ 8:40pm
DIPA is great but why does it have to be 8.5% which is essentially a born to die. I would prefer something round about 6.0% which would be drinkable for the majority.
johnny63 19.08.2017 @ 7:26pm
The Tangerine session IPA wins for me, very refreshing and drinkable but with plenty of character. The Black IPA was nice but I've tasted better Black IPA's (Fierce Night Shift, Dancing Man Last Waltz).Double IPA nice too, but I preferred the tangerine.
Richie 19.08.2017 @ 4:38pm
Tried the Tangerine IPA on tap at the New Brewdog in York and its was fantastic, full of flavour with a great aroma. I tried the double IPA and Black Rye which are both good but the Tangerine pips it for me!!!
Gav W 18.08.2017 @ 8:07pm
Bought two sets but have only tried the Tangerine SIPA so far and I loved it. If the Black Rye and DIPA are better then I'm in for a treat. I want to vote Tangerine before I've even tried the others, absolutely loved it.
Jason CMD 18.08.2017 @ 5:22pm
I managed to order them all last night and figured the DIPA would be the one to win out and that was the case. The boozy finish did it for me. I also like the spice and roast from the Black Rye IPA and the Tangerine one was interesting but came third in my eyes. Still they were all good and it was a closer call that I had figured to pick between them. But it was the double IPA I voted for.
Hélène from France 18.08.2017 @ 4:57pm
Juste Love the black RYA IPA so much !!!!!
BrewDog Rich 18.08.2017 @ 4:33pm
Allan - Thanks for the detailed feedback! These brand new Prototypes aren't meant to be compared to Libertine, Hardcore or any others from our back catalogue - they are brand new recipes - although it's interesting that people are doing that! We're happy with them all the same. I guess time will tell which one wins out. Did you try them on draft or in the bottle?
Allan 18.08.2017 @ 3:33pm
Just tried them all and I'm really in a quandary. When announced, my reaction was that I wanted something along the lines of Libertine so I thought the black rye IPA would easily get my vote. If I didn't like it then I'm a double IPA kinda person so surely that would get my next vote...

Anyway I've just tried them and, unfortunately, the black rye IPA is no Libertine. It doesn't have the hoppy/orange kick that Libertine used to, nor is it very rye-ish. It might as well be a standard black IPA. Sorry but Libertine and Black Betty were/are better.

So we move onto the double IPA. Initial impression is quite good, it's got the bitterness of Hardcore, but not the maltiness (Over the years I started to think Hardcore was increasingly too malty for my taste). However it doesn't deliver in the hop aroma enough for me. It's not a patch on Born to Die but, then again, it's aimed at potentially being a core beer so I understand the reduced hop profile. Overall, it's not different enough to catch my vote.

Which leaves the "Session IPA", he says deridingly. I'm not much of a session beer drinker. Not that I am all about ABV but I simply don't drink pint upon pint of beer like I did as a student. I tend to drink 3 or 4 small beers in a session so aim for big beers. My approach to this beer wasn't favourable to say the least. I have to say, however, it packs a flavour punch so different from anything in the range that I am intrigued. The taste is close to orange Nerds (remember those sweets that came in a carboard packet?). It's tasty, different, and gets my vote.

The take away from this rant, however, is simple. Please bring back Libertine! As it was, thank you very much :-)
Co-link-Cooper 18.08.2017 @ 1:22pm
Tried them all last night, found the tangerine overpowering crowding out any other notes. Double IPA was a very close second, very drinkable maybe scarily so at the given ABV. Winner for me was the dark rye, deep and decadent brew clean on the palate from the resinous piney hop notes, but delicious dark and chocolaty with lots of cocoa body, not too strong almost a meal...at least a pudding.
Chris 17.08.2017 @ 10:26pm
Just tried them all...double ipa for me!! ????????
Rosemary Leeds 17.08.2017 @ 7:13pm
Love the tangerine ???? can I vote 1000000 times ;-)
ShackleMeElmo 17.08.2017 @ 1:01pm
Oh man dunno which to choose I'm leaning towards the double IPA but they all sound so good
Pete H 17.08.2017 @ 12:34pm
Again, that is my weekend sorted ....
Marc 17.08.2017 @ 12:32pm
Where can they be tasted? Barcelona Brewdog Bar maybe?
BrewDog Rich 17.08.2017 @ 12:30pm
Eugene - two paragraphs up! We weren't 100% happy with it so have decided not to release it at this time
Eugene 17.08.2017 @ 12:29pm
And where is Blond Ale?
Dave K 17.08.2017 @ 12:05pm
Tangerine Dream!
Allan 17.08.2017 @ 11:37am
I'm really looking forward to these! The black IPA sounds like a new version of good ol' Libertine with a hint of Rye, and the double IPA sounds very similar to BtD :-D
Michelle 17.08.2017 @ 11:34am
I'm loving the sound of the Tangerine IPA! Can't wait to try them all...more than once to make sure I've made the right choice....
Maxwell 17.08.2017 @ 11:32am
Black Rye for me, sounds like the most interesting and unusual of the trio
Brian 17.08.2017 @ 11:22am
An all IPA challenge. Challenge accepted
Deeks90 17.08.2017 @ 11:10am
Gotta be the tangerine with the DIPA next but will try them at the weekend
