The 2018 BrewDog Beer Geek Awards have just concluded, with the second year of the contest unearthing some incredible geeky talents. We announced all of the category winners last week with Matt Hickman being crowned Europe’s Biggest Beer Geek and Bill Vanderburgh scoring America’s Biggest Beer Geek in our ceremony over in Columbus. Our judges deliberated further and awarded the overall prize of World’s Biggest Beer Geek 2018 to Matt for his photographic brilliance. Alongside the trophy Matt takes home €1,000 and is heading to the MASH Festival in Barcelona, as well as a week hunting out fresh IPA in San Diego.
As amazing as Matt’s entry was, we had such a full shortlist of beery excellence we figured we should highlight the work of some of the people who took the time to submit their portfolios to the Beer Geek Awards. So in this, the first of two posts, we are taking a run-down of the people who truly impressed our judging panel in the Beer Reviewer Geek award (and first) the Beer Photographer award, with captions in their own words. Thanks to all who took the time to enter!

Peanut Butter and Jelly is an all-time favourite snack of mine, so I just wanted the unique flavours of this beer to be bold in my photo.
Achieved through a bit of photoshop, I wanted this image to show off the name of the beer, through an almost karatee chopped / kicked bottle explosion.
A can I designed for Pillars Brewery’s Lager Experiment. I wanted the photo to encapsulate the experimental nature of the beer.

2018 Beer Reviewer Geek Award Shortlist
WINNER - Michael Wilson

These five guys are writing (or in Oli’s case YouTubing) detailed yet well-structured and concise reviews of all the myriad of flavours of craft beer. The panel of judges loved Michael’s jargon-busting approach on his Craft & Slice blog, leaving him at the top of this shortlist, but the work of Oli, Martin, Manol and Sam is right up there. Great reviews make you want to seek the beer out and leave you thirsty until you have found it. These five do that and more.
Next up in this series we will be moving the spotlight over to the shortlisted entrants for Beer Social Media Geek and Beer Blogger Geek. Check back next week for that and if you think you have what it takes to write award-winning reviews or snap trophy-bagging beer imagery, the BrewDog Beer Geek Awards will return in 2019!
