Last week we highlighted two of the shortlists for our recently concluded BrewDog Beer Geek Awards; the standard of entries was so high that we had to give those who nearly won their moment of glory. Today we run the rule over another pair of categories – as we take a closer look at the people who impressed our judges most in the Beer Blogging Geek and Beer Social Media Geek contests.
In case you missed it, photographer Matt Hickman came out on top of all the category winners, being crowned Europe’s Biggest Beer Geek – with taproom hunter Bill Vanderburgh scoring America’s Biggest Beer Geek in our ceremony over in Columbus. When they went head to head it was Matt who triumphed, taking the laurels of World’s Biggest Beer Geek 2018 (as well as €1,000 spending money for paid trips to the MASH Festival in Barcelona, and San Diego.
But let’s take a closer look at some of the amazing entrants who nearly came away with a trophy.
2018 Beer Social Media Geek Award Shortlist
WINNER – David Hill
Social Media is an ever-present in our lives these days and the final four in this category was always going to be a difficult decision. But our panel of European judges selected a quartet of guys who share a passion for craft beer and a natural talent for showcasing it in the very best way online.
Nic is a professional photographer and co-host of The Beer Podcast, Balázs combines beer reviews with sharp and witty images on his Instagram feed and Filipi searches far and wide in the Netherlands (and beyond) for great beer. But our judging panel was blown away by David Hill’s Instagram feed, and his use of illustration bringing beer reviews to life in a truly unique way!
2018 Beer Blogging Geek Award Shortlist
WINNER – Eoghan Walsh – Brussels Beer City
- Matt Hickman – Matt the List
- Neil Kiddie – Hop Pilot
- Jean-Vincent Soriano - Une bière et Jivay
Blogging underwent a quiet revolution a few years ago, with the best exponents now seen as true conveyors of unbiased opinion on the internet. Committed men and women writing whatever they see fit on anything they discover. If you are after a true opinion, one that dovetails with your thinking or one that is totally opposed, then chances are these days it is a blog you click through for.
Our shortlist of six Bloggers (five keyboard-based and one Vlogger – the mighty Jean-Vincent) all have that immediately obvious passion to seek out stories relating to a myriad of aspects of beer and brewing, and then tell them in a hugely entertaining and educated way. The best bloggers are vital resources to their cities – like our Beer Blogging Geek winner Eoghan who depicts everything you need to know at the sharp end of the Brussels beer and bar scene; in brilliant fashion. If you're based in the Big Smoke and looking for your beer fix, Rebecca Pate's blog is an essential read for up to date news on all beery happenings in East London. Any culinary aficionado's out there, check out Neil Kiddie's blog, a fellow foodie, who's recipes and beer pairings are undeniably mouthwatering!
Thanks to everyone who entered the 2018 BrewDog Beer Geek Awards in Europe, the United States and beyond. We had a blast reading, listening, watching and scoring everything that was sent in and we hope you had just as great a time collating your entries and sending them in (with a beer on the go at the same time). The Beer Geek Awards will return in 2019. Stay tuned!
