Today is the first Friday past the summer solstice, and the nights – whilst not exactly drawing in – are at least inching their way back a little. So to make up for that, we figured that you deserved something of a treat, and are releasing a bumper crop of new beers into our online shop today! We have our new summer seasonal (guaranteed to make winter feel six months away) and a deep, dark resonant beer to turn to in case it appears earlier than expected. Which let’s face it, is probably a reasonable bet. Either way, you’re covered!

Hop Fiction

For the long, shimmering summer haze, we have our July to September seasonal – Hop Fiction. This beer initially appeared as part of the 2014 Prototype Series, where it was a wort and whirlpool-hopped 6.5% IPA. Vagabond was the champion that year; the IPA version of Hop Fiction was almost there, but we felt needed an extra tweak to fully bring out the beer that it deserved to be. At 5.2%, the extra pale malt gives a perfect backbone to the blend of three hops – as a Pale Ale, Hop Fiction really sings.

Staying true to the origins of its precursor, Hop Fiction is not kettle hopped – the innovation of mash and whirlpool hopping carries over. It is also dry-hopped, with that surge of early and late hops really rounding the brew out. Now, it is a perfect summer US Pale Ale – rounded citrus and light stone fruit (mango, lychee and apricot), with a rising hop-laced bitterness. Designed to be wheeled out whenever the sun makes an appearance, Hop Fiction is the perfect storyline to the longest months.

At the other end of the spectrum – the resoundingly far distant end – we have our other new release. Marking our eighth year of brewing, today we also unveil our 16.1% anniversary beer, Dog D. This is our celebratory yardstick; a milestone in liquid form. Like Dogs A-C before it, this year’s iteration is an imperial stout, brewed with a compelling mix of cacao, coffee and naga chillies. Yet unlike its forerunners, Dog D has also been aged in bourbon barrels.

This gives a whole new interpretation to the beer; an extra plane of flavour that follows the powerful beginnings of espresso, dark chocolate and warming spice. It marks a departure from previous years – but also a progression. As the dark molasses and brandy-laced elements come to the fore on the long, welcoming finish, it becomes a true marker for another year of BrewDog – a fitting tribute, we think.

Bookending the dark majesty of Dog D, another beer fit for summer. There’s very little else to say about Jack Hammer that hasn’t already been said – it was the overwhelming request when we announced the arrival of our in-house canning line (aside from Tactical Nuclear Penguin. You guys!). And from today, Jack Hammer cans come to our online shop, a click away from your next festival, camping trip or barbecue – pretty much anywhere that you need a massively hopped India Pale Ale.

These beers are all available right now alongside the rest of the amazing beer and merch in our re-tooled online shop. If you manage to shake off those end of midsummer blues, let us know in the comments what you think of them. Also, if you have Dog A, B or C in your cellar (or all three), a vertical tasting should be a perfect way to reveal the expressions conveyed by the barrel-ageing in Dog D, as well as the influences of cellaring on imperial stouts.
